Jim Moeller is the founder of Moeller Law PLLC, a business-focused legal practice built around a more efficient and flexible model than a traditional law firm.

His background spans private practice, in-house leadership, and executive-level advisory roles across finance, business, and technology.

Jim began his legal career at a large law firm in Minneapolis, where he represented private and public companies in mergers and acquisitions, capital markets transactions, and emerging company matters. During this time, he also dedicated significant effort to pro bono work, including representing asylum seekers.

He later transitioned in-house, serving as Assistant General Counsel at a large institutional asset manager based in St. Paul, Minnesota. In that role, he worked across a broad range of legal and compliance functions, including product development, regulatory filings, service provider oversight, and compliance program implementation. He also managed outside counsel in litigation matters and oversaw annual reviews of adviser and fund compliance programs.

Jim subsequently served as General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer of a multi-strategy investment adviser, where he led all legal and compliance functions and worked closely with senior management on strategic and operational matters.

During his tenure, the firm grew from under $150 million to over $5 billion in assets under management.

His responsibilities included:

  • overseeing all legal affairs of the firm

  • advising on regulatory, compliance, and risk management matters

  • drafting and negotiating a wide range of commercial agreements

  • supporting complex transactions and strategic initiatives

He also worked closely with affiliated businesses, including those focused on technology, real estate, and other investment structures, providing legal oversight across a diverse set of activities.

This combination of private practice and in-house leadership experience informs Jim’s approach to legal work.

The focus is on practical, business-oriented advice—helping clients make decisions and move forward, rather than providing purely theoretical analysis.

Moeller Law was founded to reflect that approach.

After working within traditional law firm and in-house structures, it became clear that many inefficiencies in legal services are structural rather than substantive.

The firm is designed to operate differently, with an emphasis on:

  • direct, senior-level engagement

  • efficient workflows

  • flexible, client-aligned pricing

  • minimizing unnecessary overhead

Jim earned his Juris Doctor from George Washington University Law School, where he served as Administrative Editor of The George Washington International Law Review. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.
